The latest blockbuster coming out of Hollywood is 2012, an apocalyptic thriller where civilization comes to an abrupt and catastrophic end on Dec. 21, 2012. The movie’s premise is built on an enduring social meme with origins in the ancient Mayan calendar — an archeological artifact that has been interpreted to predict the end of days in 2012.

Fortunately, few mainstream scientists believe that our civilization will end on Dec. 21, 2012. However, as with most persistent social memes, there is just enough actual science in the 2012 theory to allow for an intriguing discussion.

One scientific phenomenon that 2012 theorists point to as evidence that the Earth is on the verge of cataclysm comes from the field of solar physics. NASA recently announced that our sun is entering a period of more intense activity. This type of solar activity often results in adverse space weather and can have a profound and negative effect on Earth-based infrastructure systems. This active solar period is expected to peak in 2012.

Clearly, for data center designers and operators, conditions that increase the potential for failure of utility power and communications systems need to be taken seriously. This tip will provide a brief history of space weather as well as tips and strategies for data center decision makers to consider to best evaluate and prepare for the threat that space weather poses to their facilities.

History of space weather
Astronomers have observed the surface of the sun for hundreds of years. As far back as 27 B.C., observers have noted that the sun’s surface is periodically marked by mysterious dark sunspots. In the past 200 years, scientists have learned that sunspot activity increases to a peak and then tails off to a minimum in regular 11.1 year cycles.

For millennia the sun’s spots waxed and waned in their 11-year cycles with little noticeable impact on human civilization. That changed in the late 1850s, with the invention of the telegraph. This invention quickly shifted the global communication paradigm.

In September 1859, renowned solar astronomer Richard Carrington observed a sudden brilliant “flare” on the sun’s surface. Eighteen hours after the solar flare — which eventually became known as the Carrington Event — the predawn sky across the globe erupted into the most brilliant display of auroral lights in recorded history. Observers as far south Jamaica, Rome and Havana were startled to see brilliant displays of pulsing red purple and green lights in the sky. Telegraph operators around the world received electrical shocks and in many cases their machines suddenly burst into flames. Mankind’s early telecommunications systems were experiencing the harmful effects of the first recorded geomagnetic storm.

The flare Carrington witnessed was the visible light from an incredibly massive explosion on the surface of the sun. These explosions occur regularly in the vicinity of sunspots and are known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The Carrington CME sent a cannonball of charged particles and magnetic energy rocketing directly at the Earth. This energy collided with the Earth’s magnetic field at near relativistic speeds. The result of this collision was a distortion of the Earth’s magnetic field that caused the spectacular northern lights and currents induced in long conductive structure. Scientists termed this event a geomagnetic storm.

The current space weather threat
At the time of the Carrington Event, only the 125,000 miles of wire set up for the nascent telegraph network had the correct properties for the induction of auroral currents. In 2009, there are many more targets for a geomagnetic storm, including transcontinental pipelines, communication lines and power transmission lines. In addition, our vulnerability to geomagnetic storms is increased because modern infrastructure networks are vastly larger than the simple systems of Carrington’s day. In particular, the electrical properties and extent of our national electric grid has led industry professionals to compare it to a continent-wide antenna for geomagnetic energy. A result of our growing dependence on electricity and telecommunications systems is that we have become simultaneously more likely to experience geomagnetic storms and more dependent on the systems most likely to be affected by such a storm.

Lower-intensity space weather incidents have occurred during a variety of solar conditions. However, without exception they are preceded by the telltale emergence of sunspots. These incidents have caused blackouts, damaged power transmission equipment and caused widespread failures of communications systems. As a result, power utility companies and government space agencies keep a close eye on solar activity and make predictions for when that activity level is expected to peak. NASA’s prediction that sunspot activity is expected to peak in 2012 is a handy coincidence for 2012 apocalypse theorists.

Scientists do not believe that the predicted increase in solar activity will result in anything like what occurs the movie 2012. However, they do believe that a Carrington-level event occurs approximately every 500 years. Therefore, it is just a matter of time before our civilization is forced to deal with a major solar event. There is also little doubt that the consequences of a Carrington Event in 2012 would be dire.

In early 2009, NASA commissioned The National Research Council to study the effects of a Carrington-type event on modern society. The study, titled Severe Space Weather Events — Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts, included the following findings.

A severe solar storm would result in large-scale blackouts that could potentially affect more than 130 million people and would expose more than 350 utility transformers to permanent damage.
The societal and economic costs of a severe geomagnetic storm were estimated to be $1 trillion to $2 trillion, with a recovery time of 4 to 10 years.
The cascading effects of a space weather event could lead to widespread food shortages, loss of basic transportation and loss of basic health services.
Strategies for data center designers and operators
For data center designers and operators eyeing the space weather threat, there are a handful of strategies that can be employed to protect facilities and systems and reduce the risks associated with space weather.

Properly maintain an on-site standby generator. Backup power plants are a must have for any mission-critical facility. In the upcoming season of increased solar activity, it is important to not only commit to standby power generators, but also to maintaining the equipment so that they operate successfully when they are needed.

Understand how location affects the space weather threat. If possible, data center and disaster recovery (DR) sites should be located in lower latitudes. The Earth’s magnetic field is concentrated around the poles. As a result, higher latitudes experience more harmful effects from geomagnetic currents. Also, data center and DR sites should be positioned closer to the point of power generation. In 1989, a major geomagnetic storm caused a blackout in eastern Canada. The length of the power distribution lines between the power plant and the affected area contributed to the blackout.

Monitor the threat. Space weather forecasting is a developing science. However, a three-day space weather forecast prepared jointly by the U.S. Deptartment of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center and the U.S. Air Force can be found at http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/forecast.html.

Develop elevated operational posture. In the event of a looming geomagnetic storm, each data center team should be armed with plans for an elevated operational posture that is understood facility-wide. This operational posture should identify key personnel and maintenance vendors as well as establish protocols for communication in the event that normal communication systems are unavailable or compromised.

Maintain ample fuel storage. Facilities should have enough ready access to fuel to keep on-site power generation systems up during an extended utility outageand an interruption in fuel delivery.

Use UPS power. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) offers a “bridge” of electrical power between utility power failure and the start of on-site power generation. In addition, a UPS provides “clean” power to your sensitive data center loads.

Install transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS). Electric utilities may attempt to prevent a complete blackout by performing extensive substation switching and load shedding. These actions may result in harmful transient voltages delivered to your facility. A TVSS system protects critical equipment from damage that results from transient voltages caused by the actions of electric utilities.

Entering a period of increased solar activity is similar to entering a period when hurricanes are more likely. Just as data center operators need to consider the effect of a hurricane on their operational continuity during hurricane season, they should make similar preparations now that we are entering solar storm season. The world may not be coming to an end in 2012, but the risk to mission-critical facilities will certainly be more real than a Hollywood special effect.

Do you feel like your days are getting shorter? They actually are!

We have all felt it. The days are getting shorter, the months and years seem to fly by. I feel like I have less time to do things now than I did years ago. I always just thought it was part of growing older, but maybe not!
Scientists call it Dark Energy because they have absolutely no clue as to what it is. Scientists have long recognized that the Universe has been growing larger since its origin 13.7 billion years ago, but it was assumed the expansion should be slowing down due to the pull of gravity. In 1998, two teams of astrophysicists discovered that the expansion is actually speeding up.
A woman named Margaret McElroy, or Margaret M as she is known, said her friends in the world of spirit have told her it is called “Photon Energy,” a band of energy traveling the Universe that is speeding everything up.
“The Photon Energy is causing so many problems for people all around the world. We think there are 24 hours in the day, but really there are only about 6 – 8. So many people don’t have the time to do the things they plan each day. They go to the bank and, before they know it, it’s lunchtime. One more appointment when they should have had two or three, and it’s time for dinner!”
Margaret also says the Photon Energy is causing many problems in the world today. It is compressing time, pressuring people, causing road rage, and bringing a lot of anger out. Metaphysically, it is designed to do just that – to bring out of humanity all the trapped energy that the majority on the Earth plane have, not only from this lifetime, but – as Margaret says – from previous lives.
And she says that this energy is going to peak in the year 2012!

What will happen in 2012?

Some friends of mine have been showing concern over the possible events that could occur in 2012. I personally don’t think anything catastrophic will happen on that day in December, but I do think its time for a change. (I sound like Obama now). I’m hoping that 2012 will mark the beginning rather than an end. As stated in the excerpt from an article below, this may be just what is needed to motivate people to obtain a better life–a better life within themselves as well as for society and for the universe.

“…It’s all about a change in global consciousness; a maturing of minds. Some believe this will be sparked by a catastrophic event, like a global economic collapse that takes us back to living off the land. Others suggest it may be a cultural thing, as more people become aware of their spiritual roots and become less materialistic. Others yet believe that the Mayan calendar is fundamentally flawed, because it’s an arbitrary date system that uses base 10 (as quantum physicist Brian Cox points out, what if then Mayans had 12 fingers?)

Either way, speculating over what will happen in 2012 probably won’t do us any good. There will always be natural and man-made threats and we should be reasonably prepared for these. But acting like the world is going to end won’t help you enjoy life today. Bizarrely though, the immense popularity of the Mayan Prophecy may be enough to raise the global consciousness and set our money-driven society on a new path of happiness and enlightenment today.”

The Medicine Wheel

We had the pleasure of attending a lecture on the Medicine Wheel with Bruce Orion this weekend. I was unfamiliar with what the wheel represented but was eager to learn whatever I could from Bruce.
First- a little about Bruce Orion. As stated in a previous post, he is a tour guide in Sedona Az. He takes people on spiritual tours through the mountains and to the many vortexes that are in the area. I liked Bruce right away. He has a “what you see is what you get” attitude. He has an aura of authority and knowledge and explains things very well with great metaphore stories. If you ever get the chance to meet him I would highly recommend the experience.
OK, now on to the Medicine Wheel.
The Medicine Wheel symbolizes the individual journey we each must take to find our own path
It has been honored by American Indian cultures for centuries. It represents everything that is. Of everything in the Universe. Everything in life is centered around the Circle. The moon, the sun, the stars, every grain of sand and every drop of water is a circle. The seasons follow a circle too.
Each direction of the wheel is represented by a color, an animal, an element, an energy.
Basically, the four areas represent:
East = Red = success; triumph
North = Blue = defeat; trouble
West = Black = death
South = White = peace; happiness

In our lifetimes we can go around the wheel more than once, especially if you are on a spiritual path.

Hello! We just wanted to thank everyone for visiting this blog and for the positive feedback we have been receiving.
When we first started this blog, it was unsure what the purpose would be. It started as a place to put our Aura pictures, but that just didnt feel like that was the purpose. In the past few weeks, the blogs purpose has been showing itself. This blog is for anyone who is starting their journey to a higher consciousness. Its for anyone who feels the growing energy within themselves and knows that something is changing. Its for anyone searching for others with similar feelings and experiences.

I found this post and just had to share it. Gregg raises all the questions we should all be asking. Why don’t more people question these issues? Afraid? Ignorant? Personally, I have asked these questions silently, but perhaps we should all be more vocal about them.

We’ve been taught to assume the truth about everything presented to us without questioning the origin of the initial facts. For example, in the United States, we were taught that the attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into WW2, yet were not taught how many United States companies profited from funding both sides of the war, nor we we taught how George W. Bush’s grandfather, Prescott Bush, personally helped to fund both sides of WW2. Had we been taught this in school, would either George H. or George W. Bush have become president? I doubt it, but that’s how propaganda has affected us as a global civilization.

With that in mind, what thoughts do you question? Here are a few of mine:

1. What are our true origins and where did we come from?

2. Explain how the differences in this planet’s races evolved. Some say mankind originated in the Middle East or in Africa, and then people migrated, causing the change in skin color. Perhaps that would explain skin color, but explain the facial differences of people from Asian decent and how this would be a biological change from evolution. Is it possible that we were ALL seeded here instead of Darwin’s theory of evolution?

3. If the bible dates our existence to approximately 4,000 BC, then how do people explain the pyramids on the Giza plateau, which date back to over 10,000 years ago?

4. Who built the underwater pyramids in the China Sea, which are estimated to be 12,000 years old?

5. Somehow, we went from homo habilis to homo erectus to homo sapien without any gradual changes in between lineages. How do you explain the lineage of mankind?

6. What are the true meanings behind these pictures?

7. How did cultures from other continents come up with the same 2012 end date without any means to communicate with one another?

8. Why did we go from a naturally harmonic calendar to the current and inharmonious Gregorian calendar?

9. Is it possible that those who “fear” God are giving their power to the church instead of keeping it for themselves?

10. Is it possible that the God mentioned in the Bible is a fallen angel?

11. Is it possible that the Roman Catholic Church supports the Luciferian Doctrine while the Protestant Church supports the Satanic Doctrine?

12. Why is god assumed to be a man? Why can’t god be a woman? Why can’t god be, “the source” without religious or gender connotations?

13. Why should anyone “fear god”? If this is an all-loving being, then why be scared of him (or her)?

14. If Jesus was so amazing, then why didn’t people write about him when he was alive? Even if the people were illiterate, they could still draw pictures. Even the cavemen documented UFO’s and aliens.

15. Why does the Roman Catholic Church have the most high-powered telescopes pointed toward the skies?

16. If Thoth and Quetzalcoatl are the same person, and Thoth is considered to be a Reptilian, is it possible the Mayans (and other civilizations with a 2012 end date) got their information from aliens?

17. Why do people assume the bible is the ultimate “truth”? Why don’t more people question the origins of the bible?

18. Why doesn’t the bible acknowledge UFO’s and extra-terrestrials? Did “God” create them as well? If so, then why do ET’s have advanced intelligence over human beings? If not, then explain ET’s.

19. There are 3 city states located in Washington, DC (which controls the world’s laws), London (banks) and the Vatican City (religion). Is it possible that the bible was written to get people to become subservient? Is it possible the bible was the original template for New World Order? Does anyone see the correlation between blind faith and being controlled by others?

20. The Roman Catholic Church removed the Books of Enoch from the bible, which stated all will be revealed in this present world. He also mentioned a wondrous civilization in the past that misused the keys of higher knowledge (presumably Atlantis). Why were these writings eliminated from the bible and why did the bible neglect to mention of previous civilizations?

21. Is it possible that the 2012 end date is a reference point to the end of a time matrix in which a particular agenda must be accomplished, e.g. either New World Order or ascension?

22. Why do we work 8+ hours each day to support the elite? Was this part of our true divine reason for incarnating here or is it to distract us from that reason?

23. Assuming there are advanced beings of life, would you imagine ET’s have “money” and work 8+ hours a day for the elite?

24. If there was no such thing as “money” what would YOU be doing with your life?

We live in a society that rewards those who follow the flock and ridicules those who think outside the box. This paradigm is changing as evidenced by the uncovered atrocities of 9/11 as more and more people awaken to seek the real truth behind who they are and who they represent.

If you are one of these people, I commend you. If you are still asleep, then perhaps it’s time that you begin searching for some answers. The bottom line is to question everything, because most of what we have been taught is not the complete truth.
